The August Cup is sponsored by The Damascus Soccer Club and Seneca Soccer Association of Montgomery County Maryland. Both clubs have a long history of providing stable environments for youth players in Montgomery County. Boys and girls of all ages have passed through our clubs while developing not only their soccer skills but also their personal skills in teamwork and leadership. Our clubs take pride in sponsoring teams of all levels from recreation to Division 1. Our belief is that players of all abilities should have the opportunity to participate in travel soccer and rise to their highest potential.
The Damascus Soccer Club and the Seneca Soccer Association, both of whom are charter affiliate members of the Maryland Soccer Foundation, have banded together in a common interest to create the annual August Cup tournament experience for teams in the U-9 to U-16 age groups.
The first two years the August Cup was dedicated to teams that now primarily play in the Division 2 to Division 6 equivalent skill level of travel soccer. In 2005, the August Cup expanded to include Division 1 and Premier level travel teams in a Champions Division. This division will be exclusively for teams playing at the highest levels of youth soccer.
We still believe that offering intermediate level teams the chance to play in the same tournament as the elite teams will serve to inspire the intermediate teams to work hard in improving their individual and team skills. With the understanding of what a "big-time" tournament atmosphere is like, we expect many intermediate level teams to continue to grow and take their places in the national level tournaments.
The inaugural August Cup tournament was held in August 2003 and was attended by 136 teams from 6 states and Washington DC. Since then the tournament has grown each year and has essentially reached the maximum capacity of the fields space available.
